Trudeau

Alright Kids, its time to give Robyn a little helping hand. You see, next weekend (the 19th) I have to go to a Canadian Studies conference here at Queens because i'm taking a Canadian studies course. Now this is all fine and good except for one little thing, my prof has asked me and 2 other people to make presentations. I NEED YOUR HELP. i'm supposed to 'survey my friends and family' and find out what they thought of Pierre Trudeau. So my friends, I EMPLORE YOU, help me out? just post a few of your thoughts on Trudeau and/ or his legacy. Even if you write that you think he is good and one reason...that would help me out TONES!
So thanks so much. And hopefully i'll survive this month of craziness.
Take care.

Hey Robyn! I'm happy to help... so hpoefully this will be helpful? Ahh Trudeau. I'm not in PoliSci, or anything like that, but I am a minor in history, so my knowledge is not nonexistent. I have always had good feedback on Trudeau from my mom, I know she was a big fan of his and that influenced my thinking, especially since my time is after his time. I think he was a charismatic person, which we could certainly use more of in politics. People were inspired by Trudeau, and that in itself is a big accomplishment, since most politicians simply end up being hated. I think he worked hard for this country, so whether one agrees with his actions and policies or not, it is commendable that he put effort into what he did, and truly cared for Canada. Tried to keep it short - Hope that helps! -- sarah

hellooooo robyn.
so i saw your blog address on your msn name and thought i'd give it a look! it looks absolutely gorgeous!
now trudeau. the man had incredibly strong opinions regarding the separation of the public and private sphere, moving canada away from dependency on american money and influence, and human rights. he did some good things (such as opening up trade relations with china which led to the americans doing the same thing and the charter) but he also did some bad things (alienating the west and quebec, the national energy program). overall, though, he had fierce nationalistic pride. he did what he thought was best for canada to put it on the map as a separate entity from both british and american rule and/or influence. he was charismatic and a fascinating leader - his successes and failures in office were all part and parcel of being a national leader.

i hope that made sense. i'm tired and hungry - it makes my writing a tad incoherent. :/

cheers! leanna

I was reading this and I see Trudeau along the lines of Leanna.
He did amazing things in setting up the Canadian Identity. I think that is the wonder of Trudeau. As a Christian I wish that some of the social issues that he presented were not done but someone would have I don't want a Canada is new Israel American style culture. But Trudeau took Canada and made us not just a symbolic Britsh 'country' but the distinct country of Canada. This is why my High School hist teacher called him his hero

I think I'm echoing the comments so far, but here's my two cents anyway:

Trudeau is hugely responsible for Canada being the way it is. The constitution and it patriation and the Charter are all his doing. At the same time, what I like about the guy in particular is that he wasn't boring. He had an attitude and a charisma that no one in Canadian politics has today. Everyone now is so deadly dull, and he was anything but.
